Eames EA206 Soft Pad / Aluminium Group Office Chair

Design & Heritage Introduced in 1969 by Charles and Ray Eames, the EA206 Soft Pad Chair is the armless variant of the celebrated EA208, part of the Aluminium Group series first launched in 1958. It incorporates the Soft Pad system of three individually upholstered cushions, combining precision engineering with advanced ergonomic support. The armless configuration provides increased freedom of movement, making it suitable for collaborative environments, home offices, or formal meeting spaces.

4-Star “Antler” Base The chair is supported by the signature four-star aluminium base, known as the “antler base” due to its distinctive horn-like form beneath the seat. Crafted from polished die-cast aluminium, the base allows 360° swivel rotation while maintaining exceptional stability. The design demonstrates the Eameses’ approach of integrating structural necessity with clear, considered form.

Soft Pad Upholstery The Soft Pad cushions are foam-filled and upholstered in premium leather, providing firm yet comfortable support. The absence of arms in the EA206 accentuates its streamlined profile and allows more versatile positioning, particularly around tables or in tighter spaces, without compromising on the chair’s structural integrity or ergonomic performance.

Fixed Height Configuration The EA206 retains a fixed-height specification, ensuring consistent seating levels across multiple chairs. This feature makes it well-suited to standardised workstations, boardrooms, or home office setups where uniformity and practicality are priorities.

Materials & Craftsmanship Each chair is hand-cut and assembled, utilising European-sourced leather and precision-cast aluminium. Over time, the leather develops a subtle patina, reflecting the quality and longevity of the materials and construction methods employed by the Eames studio.
